Score 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

(includes 2% petit verdot): Red-ruby color. At once medicinal and liqueur-like on the nose, offering aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate and licorice pastille. Dense, sappy and sweet if a bit youthfully aggressive, with the chocolatey character following through on the palate. Finishes with slightly gritty, building tannins and some alcoholic warmth. Winemaker Luc Morlet noted that this cabernet was harvested well into November but without any rot, and that the alcohol level is 15%.

From St. Helena in Napa, the Cabernet Sauvignons were tasted too late for the big Napa report published in the October issue. Both are nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon with a small dosage of Petit Verdot that come from a vineyard on Glass Mountain planted in Obsidian and clay soils. Made from tiny yields (a single cluster per shoot), the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Mon Hommage performed well, offering sexy black currant fruit intertwined with notions of unsmoked cigar tobacco, espresso roast, white chocolate and damp earth. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, it should drink well for a decade. This new small project has hired Luc Morlet as their consultant. Tel. (713) 256-9169
