Tasting notes
The 2019 Ode to Lucien Red Wine is a Bandol-styled blend coming from incredibly old vines planted throughout northern California. Lots of blueberries, tree bark, loamy soil, iron, and some peppery meatiness emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a round, rich, textured mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. As with most wines here, short-term bottle age is the name of the game.

The 2019 Ode to Lucien, dedicated to Lucien Peyraud of Domaine Tempier, is fabulous. In this vintage, it is mostly Mataro from Bedrock, plus a dollop of Grenache from Gibson Ranch. Plush and explosive in the glass, the 2019 marries richness with translucent energy. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, spice, lavender and licorice are some of the many aromas and flavors that build. A wine of substance and depth, the 2019 is positively stellar. There is a little bit of rusticity and heartiness in the tannin, but that's part of the charm.
