A steal at the current prices and the 2005 Domaine La Garrigue Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Romaine would stand up to bottles that are 3 to 4 times the price. The nose is outstanding and shows ripe black cherry fruit mixed with spice, leather, earth and beautiful garrigue notes. It's complex and shows plenty of depth and southern Rhone typicity. The palate is medium bodied, precise and pure with nice acidity, ripe fruit and fine grained tannins on the enjoyable finish. While the 2004 is much more spice driven, this shows better fruit and depth. An awesome wine and while I bought a case, I'm wondering if I should get another.

Readers looking for an absolutely fabulous value should check out the 2005 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine, a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah. This is all that a Cotes du Rhone should be, and it is essentially declassified Vacqueyras, but better than many of the wines of Vacqueyras. Full-bodied, rich, with explosive levels of kirsch liqueur, licorice, and Provencal herbs, this wine is luscious, heady, and best drunk over the next 3-4 years.
