Tasting notes
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is the last vintage Bevan made, as the winery is no longer taking this fruit from Pritchard Hill. Delicate herbal shadings accent notes of cherry, redcurrant and cassis on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is admirably juicy, fresh and red-fruited, finishing silky and elegant.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is a more medium to full-bodied, lively Cabernet that doesn’t have the sheer balance or seamlessness of the top wines here, yet brings beautiful fruit and richness, and is unquestionably an impressive, satisfying effort. Black raspberries, blueberries, chalky minerality, chocolate, and hints of iron all make up the bouquet, and I suspect it’s going to round into form with 2-4 years of bottle age.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is outrageously vivid and striking, right out of the gate. Crushed rocks, menthol, spice, leather, graphite and savory/earthy notes all run through this large-scaled, super-sized mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Intense mineral and savory notes punctuate the huge finish.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard is dense, powerful and explosive, as wines from this site often are. Savory and mineral notes are laced throughout a core of inky dark fruit. The tannins are quite powerful, and yet all the elements come together so well. The 2019 Houyi has a lot of potential. It is one of the most promising wines in this range.
