The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru shows a lot of reduction on the nose that occludes the fruit and terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, rather simplistic for a Grand Cru and with some dry wood tannins on the finish. I am not convinced about the ageing potential of this wine. Pale to mid garnet. Ripe enough fruit but tannins dominate at the moment. Not the purest finish. It will probably come round but needs lots of time. (JR)
The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very elegant and poised bouquet, fine transparency here with superb delineation, not powerful but very precise and almost understated in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant chewiness to the tannin, good body, more assertive in the mouth than on the nose with a chalky texture toward the finish. Good length, lean and poised but fanning out with confidence—what a sublime expression of this famous vineyard.
About the producer
Based south of Nuits-Saint-Georges in Prémeaux-Prissey, Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999, grouping all of Jean-Claude Boisset’s holdings under one name. The property has a total 40 hectares of vines, with extensive holdings in Vougeot as well as plots in six Grands Crus.
