Opaque ruby. Powerful, brooding aromas of ripe dark berries and cherry. Deeply concentrated bitter cherry and chocolate flavors are complemented by chewing tobacco and candied licorice. Chunky tannins amplify the wine's serious mien and add chewiness to the finish. Became spicier with air, which lightened the mood a bit, but this really deserves cellar time.

As usual, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard is more primordial and broodingly backward than its siblings. It offers notes of charcoal and earthy black currants, high tannins, and a full-bodied, powerful personality. While filled with purity and depth, it will need time in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2025. Previously recommended: 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (90), 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard (95+), 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard (92+), 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Hyde Vineyard (91), 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard (94). Inky violet. Seductive spice- and floral-accented blackberry and cassis aromas, with a gentle hint of cured tobacco. Ripe and plush, with sweet dark berry flavors, gentle tannins and an impressively sweet tone on the finish. This is extremely concentrated but there's impressive mineral lift, too.
