Good medium red. Slightly liqueur-like aromas of redcurrant, plum, coffee bean and mocha, plus complicating whiffs of leather and fruit cake. Plush, silky and fine-grained on entry, then quite spicy and delineated in the middle palate, with firm but well-integrated acidity and good shape to its red berry, spice and soil flavors. Finishes with a firm dusting of tannins and rising length. A very good showing, but appears to be at peak right now, as my sample displayed a touch of nutty, balsamic oxidation and a tart edge with air. Doesn't really expand in the mouth.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, which could be expected to tower qualitatively over the 2000, did not do so. It possesses supple tannin, medium body, and layers of cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with spice box, cedar, licorice, and dried herbs. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Tel.
