Score 92/100 · Drink 2022-2037, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2020

The 2017 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard opens with striking exotic aromatics. Pretty and nuanced on the palate, the 2017 is silky and elegant, with a bit less mid-palate richness and body than was the case in the earlier days at Turley - this is unusually restrained. Dried cherry, mint, blood orange and pomegranate come together in a Hayne that shows a ton of character, but very much in a different style than is typical.

The Hayne vineyard in St. Helena was planted in 1902. A barrel sample, the 2017 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and very pretty rose petal and violet perfume with warm peach cobbler, blueberry and boysenberry fruit jam, cinnamon stick and warm baking spice. Medium to full-bodied, it's got wonderful peach and tricolor fruit layers in the mouth with loads of spicy accents, ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful juicy acidity, finishing long and layered. This will be bottled in March 2019. 675 cases are expected to be made.

The 2017 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard is a wine of total sophistication and polish. Nothing in particular stands out. Instead, it is the wine's total balance that impresses most, Silky tannins and lifted, perfumed aromatics add to the wine's gracious personality and overall charm.
