(15.7% alcohol; this was the first vintage of the Hayne Zin bottled with less than 16% alcohol since the 1993): Bright, full red. Sexy musky scents of cherry, raspberry, orange zest, spices and black pepper. Even darker in the mouth, with the flavors of blueberry, pepper and spices boasting terrific verve and definition, not to mention captivating inner-mouth perfume. This compellingly juicy, savory Zinfandel finishes with firm but perfectly integrated tannins and still seems to be just short of its plane of peak drinkability. A perfect example of how this bottling does not necessarily track Napa Valley vintages for Cabernet, as the vines here were picked well before early-October rains resulted in widespread botrytis.

Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, cinnamon and spice aromas convey a powerful impression of vinosity. Then wonderfully bright and energetic in the mouth, with harmonious acidity giving shape and lift to the intense flavors of raspberry, exotic fruits and orange peel. Finishes with superb spicy persistence. Real time-capsule zinfandel.

One of the most famous Zinfandels made is Turley’s 2006 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard. Always a big, backstrapping, super-concentrated Zinfandel, the 2006 is much more elegant than usual, without the blockbuster power. It is hardly a wimpish wine at 15.7% natural alcohol, but the overall impression is one of delicacy, finesse, and beautiful black cherry and currant notes intermixed with some lavender, spring flowers, and incense. A pretty wine, and another Zinfandel in this vintage that has a somewhat Pinot Noir sensibility to it, it should drink nicely for 5-7 years as well. (Not yet released) Tel.
