(16.2% alcohol; a very small crop from a hot, dry vintage in which the harvest started at the end of August): Bright, dark red. Even darker on the nose than the '03, showing port-like black cherry, licorice and coffee aromas. Sweet, thick and densely packed; a massive wine from a hot, dry year. Shows a slightly roasted character as well as a savory quality, almost like a dry port, but Passalacqua assured me that it would have been a mistake to pick this fruit any earlier. Seamless, slightly chocolatey Zinfandel with an explosive tannic, horizontal finish. Less primary than the '03 but this should go on for years.

(16.2% alcohol) Good full ruby. Black cherry and violet aromas suggest a hugely rich wine. Then fat, sweet and thick, with great depth of texture and chocolatey richness. Today, though, this seems almost too ripe for its own good, and the fruit is in the background. Finishes with huge chocolatey tannins. This was just bottled, and this is not the best time to be tasting this. Turley's Hayne Vineyard zinfandel is always one of my favorites but for now I will defer judgment.

With 16.3% alcohol, the 2004 Zinfandel Hayne Vineyard is one of Turley’s two or three most prodigious Zinfandels. A dense purple color is accompanied by aromas of white flowers, black raspberries, blackberries, cassis, melted licorice, and pepper. Huge, rich, and concentrated, it is a testament to the greatness of Zinfandel from a vineyard planted by Italian immigrants in 1904. It should drink well for at least a decade.
