Vivid red. Highly complex, explosively perfumed nose evokes cherry, red berries, vanilla and incense. Sappy, vibrant and expansive, with lively acidity lending precision to the flavors of raspberry and cherry liqueur, pungent minerals and blood orange. The precise, perfumed finish features fully absorbed tannins and outstanding persistence.

Lato's 2010 Pinot Noir The Prospect Sierra Madre Vineyard is impeccable. Sweet dark cherries, mint, licorice, tobacco and sweet spices are beautifully layered in this expressive nuanced Pinot. The Prospect shows lovely depth, but no weight and a more fruit-driven personality than the Duende. At the same time, I wouldn't wait too long on the 2010, it is singing right now.

The Prospect shows lovely depth, but no excess weight and a more fruit-driven personality than the Duende. At the same time, I wouldn't wait too long on the 2010, it is singing right now. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. Paul Lato's wines are imbued with passion and personality. This is another superb set of wines from one of California's hottest under-the-radar producers. This year, Lato has two new wines; a Chardonnay from Hilliard Bruce (for whom he also consults) and a Grenache from the Larner Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley.
