Good medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, cassis, spice cake, cocoa powder, mocha and chocolate. Superripe, sweet and supple, with vibrant flavors of blackberry, violet, spice cake and dark chocolate. A big, rich, chocolatey wine finishing with exotic notes of woodsmoke and mocha.

There was nothing to complain about with the 2002 Merlot Alder Springs Vineyard. Gorgeously sweet red, blue, and black fruits jump from the glass along with hints of cola, earth, and new oak. Spicy, with excellent texture as well as ripeness, and a lush, up-front texture and taste, it should drink beautifully during its first 7-8 years of life. I admire what Les Behrens, Bob Hitchcock, their wives, friends, and lunatic dog are doing at their winery and cellars on the top of Spring Mountain. They are obsessed fanatics who make wine with no compromises ... obviously my kind of people. Tel. 707-963-1774; Fax 707-963-8206
