Tasting notes
Absolutely massive in extract and richness, but well-balanced, is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Herold Mastodon. This is another 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and there are only 25 cases of magnums, hence the rarity and rather intimidating price. This full-bodied wine offers blackberry and attractive notes of charcoal embers intermixed with cassis, licorice and a touch of black truffle. It has great structure and density and is built for 25-30 years of ageability. ($800.00/1.5L)

The new 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Mastodon, a single barrel selection is rich, concentrated and super-extracted in style, but not meaningfully better nor more complex than the other wines in this lineup. Inky and jammy in style, the Mastodon will appeal most to readers who like super-sized Cabernets. The magnum format is quite appropriate.
