(from a vineyard located between Staglin and Scarecrow, according to Aaron Pott): Good ruby-red. Crushed black fruits and licorice pastille on the nose, lifted by mint and floral high notes. Very dense and sweet but youthfully reduced, with the minty quality carrying through on the palate. Seriously rich and deeply dark-fruity, especially considering that the vines were planted in 2004. Finishes broad and long, with substantial ripe tannins supported by mid-palate stuffing.

Smoke, tobacco and iron add complexity to a core of dark expressive fruit. The Arsenal isn't as sumptuous as the Stags' Leap, instead it is the wine's pure structure and minerality that impress the most.

I was deeply struck by Aaron Pott’s wines this year. The 2010s are terrific, but the bigger story, at least today, is how promising the 2011s are.
