Tasting notes
The 2013 Pinot Noir Suerte Solomon Hills Vineyard is the biggest and richest of the three Santa Maria Pinots. Powerful, ripe and intense, the 2013 leans towards the voluptuous end of what this site is capable of. A host of dark-fleshed stone fruits, new leather and spice find plenty of structural intensity underpinning. Today, the 2013 comes across as raw and not fully formed, so readers need to be patient. Solomon Hills is, in my view, one of the truly great vineyards in Santa Barbara County. It will be interesting to see how things shape up here over time.

Possibly the greatest wine to date from this incredible site that's located just south of Santa Maria, Lato's 2013 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard Suerte offers sensational levels of sweet red fruits, currants, forest floor, spring flowers and salty minerality on both the nose and palate. Sexy, seamless and elegant, with its acidity perfectly integrated into its core of sweet fruit, it doesn't put a foot wrong, has fine tannin and is already hard to resist. Nevertheless, it should be better in another 1-2 years and drink well through 2023+.
