The 2017 Syrah In The Hills is maturing beautifully, smoky and animalistic in style, with a bouquet of air dried meats, cracked pepper, black olives, ashen stone and the slightest hint of dill. This washes across the palate, surprisingly lifted and vibrant, with citrus-tinged blackberries and salty mineral tones offset by sage nuances. The 2017 finishes remarkably fresh yet long, with pepper-tinged black currants and wild herbal tones that linger on and on. This is totally transporting me to the Northern Rhône.

Immediately impressive, the 2017 Syrah In The Hills wafts from the glass with classic tones of barbecue smoke pit, olive tapenade, black raspberry, worn leather and black pepper. Medium-bodied but full of flavor, the wine is jam-packed with seductive red floral tones, mixed berry chutney and applewood-smoked bacon with high toned red fruit essence. The 13.7% alcohol frames the expression and all of its complexities. It’s hard to pack this much wine expression and sophistication into a silky, smooth experience. The wine continues to evolve with complexity and persistence for more than a minute, daring me not to take a second sip, which I can’t do. Must. Give. In. This wine has serious wow factor! I can clearly see Christophe Baron’s input and expertise blossoming with this expression. Bravo!

Incorporating a whopping 10% Viognier, the 2017 In The Hills comes from the Foothills in the Sun Vineyard (the same vineyard as the Foothills Reserve) and was aged 11 months in 25% new oak. It offers a more rounded, opulent, softer style (no doubt due to the high Viognier) as well as lots of meaty dark fruits, toasted spice, leather, and chocolate aromas and flavors. It's another beautiful, fleshy, classy Syrah to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years, if not longer.

Impressive nose, weighty with a lovely violet and dried fig note. Lovely peppery snap on the palate and floral notes – a ripe and glycerol feel but has layers of fruit and spice. Very attractive wine which carries its weight really well – elegant and fleshy. (AC)
