Score 91/100 · Drink 2026-2038, Neal Martin, May 2026

The 2018 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle does not quite deliver the precision of the previous vintage, but it has more purity than the 2015, with kirsch, blood orange and Italian herbs. The palate is well balanced, with gentle grip and fine tension, managing to disguise the warmth of the season, though it needs a little more delineation towards the finish. Still, this is a fine La Rochelle, though just pipped by the 2016.

The 2018 Moulin-à-Vent La Rochelle, from a south-facing site on pure granite, is bright, punchy and full of character. Dark cherry, gravel, mint, licorice and spice infuse the 2018 with striking layers of nuance. More than anything, the 2018 impresses with its energy. I would give the 2018 a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften. It’s a gorgeous wine.
