(50% whole clusters; no new oak; from a yield of just one and a half tons per acre): Good medium red. Nuanced scents of raspberry, smoke, rose petal, spices, tobacco leaf and bacon fat. Initially tightly wound, this Grenache opened beautifully with air to reveal flavors of red berries, spices, smoked meat and minerals accented by a welcome hint of orange zest, which gives this savory wine a touch of youthful bitterness on the finish. This broad, fine-grained, suavely tannic Grenache builds nicely with air while retaining a light touch. The vine direction in this vineyard minimizes the effects of the hottest afternoon sun and promotes retention of fruit, noted winemaker Elizabeth Bourcier. I'd expect this wine to merit a higher score with some more bottle age, so hold it for a year or two. (13.7% alcohol)

The 2015 Grenache la Paciencia Vineyard was showing very well indeed, wafting from the glass with a complex aromatic mélange of garrigue, wild strawberries, peony and balsam bough. On the palate, the wine is pure, voluptuous and expansive, with wonderfully silky structure and a layered core of succulent fruit, concluding with a long, tangy finish. Beautifully balanced and amazingly texturally finessed, this is a fabulous Grenache from Elizabeth Bourcier.

Starting with the 2015 Grenache La Paciencia from bottle, this brilliant wine tastes like a Chambolle-Musigny mixed with a Châteauneuf du Pape from Rayas! Strawberries, raspberry liqueur, green olive, and floral notes all flow to a medium-bodied, ethereally textured, beautiful Grenache that has plenty of intensity, yet just dances on the palate with no weight or heaviness. Enjoy this elixir over the coming 7-8 years. Made by Elizabeth Boucier of Cayuse (the wines are made at Cayuse), these latest releases under her No Girls label are unquestionably some of the best to date. While the wines always lean towards the more fresh, elegant end of the spectrum, they’ve gained depth and richness over the past handful of years. Today, they’re certainly on par with anything coming out of the region.
