Coming from vines planted in 1896 on shale soils, the 2022 Nervo Ranch Heritage Wine is a blend of primarily Zinfandel, along with Negrette and Grenache, among others, that were all co-fermented, adding a lifted peppery spice to the mix. It’s very pretty on the nose with aromas of pressed flowers, mixed berries, and wild herbs. Medium to full-bodied, with good elegance, it has a plush, refined texture and evenly balanced acidity with a refreshing feel. It has a very good structure and perfumed notes of apricot on the finish. I love this now, and it should continue to improve given another few years in the cellar. Drink 2025-2032.

Full bottle 1,228 g.  Planted in 1896 on 30- to 40-degree slopes of shale. Roughly 80% Zinfandel with 16 other varieties, Negrette (known as Pinot St George in CA) most important at >10%.  Lots of Trousseau Noir, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Aubun as well. Medium verging on deep purple in colour. Sweet red and black fruit and bramble with a touch of cinnamon spice. Plump and ripe on the palate with fresh acidity and cocoa-powder fine tannin. Really lovely – could drink now or wait. (SCJ)

The 2022 Nervo Ranch Heritage comes from a vineyard near Ridge’s Geyserville property, planted in 1986 to 18 varieties, including Grenache, Negrette, Trousseau, Alicante Bouschet and Chenin Blanc. It has arresting stone fruit and floral aromas, wafts of nectarine and wild berry jam and nuances of pepper and dried flowers. The full-bodied palate offers a core of bright, peppery fruit framed by clay-textured tannins and juicy acidity, and it has a long, floral finish.

A Zinfandel-based field blend of 18 or more varieties including Négrette, Grenache Noir, Trousseau Noir and Alicante Bouschet. Aged for 14 months in 25% new French oak. Smells of blueberries, peaches, flowers and herbs. Explosively juicy blackberry and cherry flavours are tinged with black peppercorns and liquorice. Lightly grippy tannins coat the mouth, as fantastic acidity keeps the saliva glands in overdrive. There's a faint salinity here that contributes to the wine's mouth-watering qualities. Very pleasurable. GV (AY)
