Wonderfully aromatic nose – capsicum, blackcurrant, tomato stalk, herbs. Superfine tannins then a surprisingly light body on the palate, considering the level of fruit and aroma – which I can imagine becoming quite relentless after one glass. (RH)

The 2012 Syrah Armagh Vineyard is the most explosive and mineral-driven of the Wind Gap Syrahs. Vivid and chiseled in the glass, the Armagh hits the palate with an exciting mélange of graphite, smoke, tar, black fruit, iron and crushed rocks, all supported by firm, incisive tannins that are going to need time to soften. The 2012 is powerful and intense, yet impeccable in its overall balance. There is so much to like here.

Bright violet color. Highly fragrant dark berries and incense on the perfumed nose, with a floral quality emerging with aeration. Suave, sweet and penetrating, offering intense black raspberry and violet pastille flavors that are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Finishes silky, pure and gently tannic, with superb clarity and persistence and resonating spiciness.

The 2012 Syrah Armagh Vineyard is the most complete of the three single-vineyard Syrahs from Wind Gap. Firm tannins lend support to an expressive, cool-climate Syrah laced with dark red fruit, game, sweet tobacco, licorice, menthol and spices. The balance of pure power and savory flavors is simply compelling. This is a great showing from the Armagh.
