Score 91-94/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2012
(racked a week prior to my visit; from a crop level described by Clavelier as barely 28 hectoliters per hectare due to extensive millerandage ): Good dark red. Tight, subdued aromas of elderberry, black cherry, coffee and licorice. Densely packed but youthfully tight, with lovely energy to its black fruit and stone flavors. Has the sheer concentration to support its firm acidity (this is 13.3% alcohol with a pH of 3.3). Finishes quite long and youthful, with serious but fine-grained tannins. The long finish leaves the mouth refreshed. This well-drained parcel of sand over rock heats up quickly during the daytime and typically does very well in cooler years.
