Score 92/100 · Drink 2020-2030, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Dec 2019

The 2017 Papera Ranch Heritage comes from vines planted in 1934—most of this vineyard is planted to Zinfandel, but Bedrock's parcel is planted to about 40% Carignan. "We drop the Carignan to one cluster per shoot," explains winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson MW, "so it ripens with the Zinfandel." Medium ruby-purple, it's youthfully coiled on the nose, slowly opening to savory aromas of autumn leaves, tree bark and earth with warm blueberries, red berry sparks and white stone fruits. The medium-bodied palate is dense and packed with perfumed fruits, framed by chewy tannins and great freshness, finishing very long and flavorful.

The 2017 Papera Heritage Wine is one of the most refined wines in this range. Bedrock pulls fruit from a section of the vineyard that has 40% Carignan, along with another 10 varieties that round out the Zinfandel-based field blend, which gives the wine an unusual amount of complexity and nuance. Bright red-toned fruit, sweet, floral aromatics and silky tannins give the Papera much of its incredibly distinctive personality.
