The 2013 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard captures the essence of Paso Robles in its intense power and huge fruit. The Pesenti is not at all subtle, and, as is often the case, the alcohol is a bit evident, but it certainly is not lacking in personality, that much is certain. I am sure some readers will find more pleasure here, but in my view the Pesenti skews a bit towards the heavier side of things.

From the estate, the 2013 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard (15.9%) comes from vines planted in the 1920s on primarily limestone soil. This wine smells like an exploding black cherry fruit bomb. Gorgeous notes of kirsch liqueur and raspberries, an almost laser-like minerality and crispness are present in this full-bodied, beautiful wine, which seems remarkably light on its feet for its power and richness. Blind-tasted, this wine could easily pass for an old vine Grenache from a Mediterranean climate – it’s that Grenache-like. This full-bodied, stunningly pure beauty is another great success for Turley in 2013. Drink it over the next decade.

The 2013 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is remarkably soft and polished for a Paso Robles wine. Kirsch, hard candy, flowers and mint are laced together in a promising wine that shows the more supple, restrained side of Paso. There is a lot of near term appeal in the Pesenti.
