From a site made famous by Joe Donelan, the 2014 Syrah Griffin’s Lair from the Petaluma Wind Gap was fermented with 50% whole clusters as well as co-fermented Viognier. This dense purple wine is also great stuff – nearly perfect. It is only 14.5% natural alcohol but offers a wonderful nose of incense, Chinese black tea, white flowers, black raspberries and blackberries, some fried bacon, pepper and espresso. The wine has super-intensity, a lush, voluptuous texture, and a long, heady finish. Again, there’s no need to defer your gratification, as this is killer already. It should last another 5-7 years.

The 2014 Syrah Griffin's Lair Vineyard is dazzling. Remarkably sculpted for such a big wine, the Griffin's Lair possesses remarkable depth and intensity from start to finish. Dark red cherry, plum, rose petal and violets are given an extra kick of aromatic lift from the 60% whole clusters. The flavors are so vivid and pure. Still, readers should plan on giving the 2014 at least a few years in bottle. Even today, though, the Griffin's Lair is a knock-out.
