Tasting notes
(60% zinfandel and 25% carignane, with petite sirah, alicante bouschet, cinsault, valdigue and some other black varieties; 30% new oak): Bright ruby. Potent aromas of musky cherry pit, blueberry and bitter chocolate, with a smoky topnote that builds with air. Plush, round and sweet, offering smoky black and blue fruit, mineral and floral pastille flavors complicated by cracked pepper and licorice. Finishes smoky and very long, with pliant tannins coming on late.

The 2012 Lorenzo's Heritage comes across as massively tannic at this stage. Readers will have to be very patient. Black fruit, earthiness, smoke, tobacco and licorice all emerge over time, but the 2012 is a wine to lay down for at least a few years. I imagine it will still be pretty special at age 20.
