Picked in early October – significantly earlier than the corresponding Schlossberg – this leads with a veritable explosion of floral perfume suggesting honeysuckle, heliotrope and hyacinth. Scents of pear and apple anticipate the luscious ripeness and infectious juiciness on a delicate, glycerol-slicked, slightly creamy palate. The finish here is billowing and subtly slate-lined, offering a fascinating contrast with its Schlossberg counterpart.

The 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese * is clear and subtle but deep and complex on the concentrated, refined, elegant and discreet nose with its fine, flinty slate aromas. This is a beauty on the palate: crystalline, clear, lush and highly refined, with lingering salinity and perfectly defined fruit. A fabulously precise and delicate Spätlese that is made with less botrytized grapes than the corresponding Schlossberg. It's bright, crystalline, straight and elegant, with a salty piquancy that is immediately stimulating. Tasted in March 2019.

From Johannes Selbach’s best site, his finest wine. The fragrance is turning on an exotic charm, which is totally borne out by the delightful zesty and juicy expression of grapefruit and orange on the palate, supported by the most tasteful of bitter nuances and a fine spicy quality. Add an exquisite herbaceous finish and a fine sprinkling of dusty minerality and you have sheer Spätlese joy. Splash it all over. (MS)
