Score 91/100 · Drink 2017-2024, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Nov 2017

This originated in the Eisendell at 300 meters elevation – specifically, in what Hexamer calls the “Eisendell Höhe” or “heights” – but that surface area doesn’t precisely correspond to the cadaster-registered surface of “Eisendell auf der Südseite,” so he has reverted to the applicable official Einzellage, Rheingrafenberg. We’re up to 79 grams of residual sugar here, held largely in check by 9.4 grams of acidity. The at once sweet, brightly refreshing and transparent expression of pear, apricot and quince is lusciously sorbet-like. Hints of sweetly-perfumed flowers and cooling green herbs add to the appeal of a delicate, very subtly creamy palate and lingering, animating finish. There was botrytis in this parcel, notes Hexamer, but he pulled it aside to inform a Beerenauslese.
