Score 98/100 · Drink 2025-2040, Jeb Dunnuck, Feb 2023

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is more dense, concentrated, and powerful, and it shows the vintage style beautifully. Darker currants, plums, graphite, crushed stone, and chocolate all emerge from the glass. Full-bodied on the palate, it has ample structure, lots of mid-palate depth, and building tannins. Even now, at close to a decade after the vintage, it’s still not in its prime drinking window. Give bottles another 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 10-15.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve picks up the power at 15.6% alcohol, but also has a slightly more saturated opaque/purple color. The wine has a glorious nose of graphite, white flowers, blueberries and blackberries and licorice followed by a full-bodied wine with great precision and delineation, super freshness, vibrancy, and compelling richness and extraction. The finish goes on for a good 55 seconds. This is flirting with perfection in a real serious way. Drink it over the next 25-30 years.

A dense, powerful Cabernet, the 2013 Reserve delivers serious intensity and raw energy. Mocha, black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and dark spices are all supported by firm beams of tannin that need at least a few years to soften. The 2013 Reserve shows the more powerful side of Stags Leap. Smoke, chocolate, sage and a host of savory undertones are layered together nicely, with considerable influence of the new heavy toast barrels.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is shaping up to be another winner from this young estate. A deep, inky wine, the 2013 Reserve boasts magnificent richness and texture, with more than enough fruit to match the big, building tannins. Beams of salinity and energy propel the flavors through to a vibrant, chiseled finish laced with violets, lavender, mocha and sweet spices. This is a fabulous showing from Odette and winemaker Jeff Owens.
