Tasting notes
The only varietal C abernet Franc in the tasting. C abernet Franc grapes sell for more than C abernet Sauvignon because they are rarer. Detert are cousins of the Macdonald brothers, who have also inherited land in the original To Kalon vineyard. From a vineyard with a claim to being part of To Kalon that was planted in 1949. The creek on the property brings down lots of stone. 250 cases made. Dark purplish crimson. Fragrant and C abernet Franc -like. Really very beautiful with more finesse than the Macdonalds’ C abernet Sauvignon . Edgy and only just fresh enough but it is SO gorgeous … almost elegant! Very long. Sweet fruit but not remotely sickly. (JR)

The 2016 Cabernet Franc is a wine of real character and personality. Deep, voluptuous and pliant, the 2016 offers striking textural depth and superb balance. As always, the Detert Franc is more a wine of site than of variety, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced throughout. A rush of red cherry jam, pomegranate and wild flowers builds into the unctuous finish. In 2016, the Franc has an extra touch of elegance and finesse.
Composed of 100% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Franc East Block is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal beautiful earthy scents of moss-covered tree bark, fallen leaves and tilled soil over a core of kirsch, red roses, crushed blackberries and tar with a waft of cinnamon stick. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm, pleasantly chewy texture supporting bags of perfumed red and black fruit layers, finishing with fantastic freshness.
