Medium ruby. Musky aromas of blackberry, smoke, wet stone, tobacco and brown spices. Very sweet but quite suave and gripping; this really coats and fills the mouth. Less flashy than some of the other Pax 2002s but more complex and complete. The big, lush tannins spread out to cover the entire mouth. Contains a high percentage of very young vines.

An explosion of blueberry liqueur, black raspberries, and exotic floral scents soars from the glass of the spectacular inky/purple-colored 2002 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard, a vineyard that is proving to be a tremendous source for many different varietals. Although this cuvee possesses 14.9% alcohol, it is well-concealed by the wine’s full body, awesome richness, great purity, and tremendous sense of fruit as well as place. There is a remarkable vigor and intensity, yet it does not taste over the top or heavy. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring, and drink it over the next 15+. This is a very exciting operation run by one of northern California’s new young turks, who is proving to have a formidable ability to translate cool climate vineyard sites into terrific wines ... all with no formal training.
