Tasting notes
The profound 2004 Syrah Castelli-Knight Ranch was fashioned from another north-facing, rocky hillside parcel sourced by Pax Mahle and Joe Donelan. Fermented with 75% whole clusters and aged 17 months in French oak (40% new), it exhibits gorgeous aromas of barbecue smoke, roasted meats, tapenade, blackberries, and cassis. Tremendous ripeness, fabulous intensity, and no hard edges make for an opulent, stunning Syrah to drink over the next 6-7 years. Good ruby-red. Captivating aromas of cassis, blackberry, black pepper and spicy oak. A sweet, pliant, broad fruit bomb of a syrah; wonderfully full, sweet and mouthcoating. Huge wine; the tannins are dusty and substantial but much less ferocious than those of the 2003.
