Tasting notes
The 2018 Evangelho Heritage Wine is so alluring. Sweet cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and perfumed red roses all grace this silky, captivating wine from Bedrock. Dollops of Mataro and Carignan round out this field blend, but it is the high percentage of Zinfandel, and its bright acid profile, that carries the day. This is such a gorgeous and expressive wine.

Field blend of mainly Zinfandel, with Mataro and Carignan making up the bulk of the remainder. They bought this vineyard in 2017 because it’s the most threatened old-vine vineyard. Half the land is for sale and being snapped up by developers. Evangelho sold to Brother Timothy of the Christian Brothers in the 1970s. Morgan gave Frank Evangelho his solemn oath they would keep the vines in the ground. Frank was shipping grapes to Canada until 1993. Knowing it is sandy and supple, they keep it from new wood. Large-format neutral oak. Herbal nose and quite a rich spread of fruit on the palate. Toasty and appetising. Long. Each block is a field blend and co-fermented. (JR)
