Score 92/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

(from a vineyard rich in gravel and cobblestones at an altitude of 1,200 feet, located near Peter Michael) Deep, bright ruby. Jammy black cherry and licorice aromas lifted by sweet oak. Sweet, densely packed and decidedly creamy, with superb fruit and considerably more vibrancy than the Sonoma Hillsides bottling. Not yet complex but very intensely flavored. Finishes with sweet, smooth tannins and excellent persistence.

The 2002 Syrah Obsidian demonstrates what heights Knight’s Valley Syrah can achieve. One of the most elegant efforts in this portfolio, its dense purple color is accompanied by a striking bouquet of floral notes interwoven with blue as well as blackberries, licorice, and background wood. This medium-bodied, stylish Syrah possesses a seamless texture and a beautiful finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. This is a very exciting operation run by one of northern California’s new young turks, who is proving to have a formidable ability to translate cool climate vineyard sites into terrific wines ... all with no formal training.
