A vintage that isn't poured very often, the 2002 Cote Rotie la Landonne is fully mature, yet has an excellent color and is far from tired or over the hill. Chocolaty dark fruits, spice-box, ground herbs and assorted meatiness gives way to a medium-bodied, elegant Cote Rotie that has a seamless texture and plenty of charm. I'd drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years, but I've no doubt it will have gradual decline beyond that.

Ruby-red. Deep, smoky, earthy aromas of cherry, chocolate and licorice. Refreshingly bitter cherry flavor is joined by a late note of graphite and supported by solid but unobtrusive tannins. This has real power and grip, finishing with deep dark fruit flavors and excellent length.

Very dark crimson. Savoury, leathery, quite different from the previous two. Very round and fruity and very fine tannins extremely well hidden – sort of splits the difference between the Mouline and Turque. Quite dry and focussed but more evolved than most Landonnes at this stage. The wine will be pretty chewy at the beginning of my suggested drinking window but because the tannins are so fine, it should be drinkable at least. (JR)

Deep, saturated red-ruby. Ripe, highly aromatic nose combines raw currant, gunflint and pepper. Then quite tightly wound and a bit youthfully disjointed, with flavors of crushed currant and fresh herbs. This was the first time we destemmed these vines, since the stems were so green, noted Philippe Guigal. Today the wine's oak tannins have not yet knit with its fruit. And yet, like La Mouline and La Turque, this would appear to offer limited aging potential by the standards of these wines.
