The 1989 L'Evangile is one of my favorite vintages of this particular era that predates the Rothschild family's partial acquisition. This is a typical bottle with an expressive, mature nose with loamy, almost peaty soil infusing the red fruit and those signature black truffle and aniseed scents. The palate is well defined with tobacco-infused red fruit, smoothly textured and covering the melted backbone supporting this Pomerol. Slightly ferrous on the aftertaste, this is a L'Evangile at its optimum stage of evolution. Tasted at the private room at Noble Rot Soho.

The 1989 L'Evangile is one of my favorite vintages from this era, just prior to its acquisition by the Rothschild family. This bottle is superb. Red fruit, terracotta and black truffles billow from the glass. The faintest hints of aniseed emerge with time. There is a warmth about the palate that is very appealing, with melted tannins, satisfying depth and grip. Satin-textured on the finish, this Pomerol is at its peak. Tasted at the Lia's Wings Charity Dinner at Medlar, London.

The 1989 L'Evangile is probably my pick of this Pomerol's 80s vintages. This bottle is no slouch. It has a lovely, quintessential Pomerol note with red fruit laced with damp loam, black truffle and a touch of aniseed. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy mouthfeel on the entry. This might be the most velvety-textured example that I have encountered, perhaps just missing an acidic bite on the slightly ferrous, yet winsome finish. At its peak now. Tasted blind at Medlar restaurant dinner.
