Tasting notes
The 2021 Pinot Noir is sourced from several sites across the Anderson Valley, including KB's estate Cerise Vineyard. It opens with a reductive nose of floral rose and sage, showing rustic tannins that evolve to reveal an elegant, tightly wound structure of finesse and fruity intensity. Medium-bodied in style, the wine was fermented in stainless steel, concrete, and wood before aging took place for 13 months in both new French oak and wood cask. It should age well another 10-15 years. This well-known Sonoma County-based collectible wine brand was started by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne in 1997, and both led and rode the considerable Pinot Noir wave of fame during the following decades. Bought by Duckhorn Wine Company in 2018, the winery continues to focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from some 40 vineyards along the Oregon and California coast, working with several Anderson Valley sites since the beginning. It purchased the Cerise Vineyard in 2016. Julien Howsepian worked as a harvest intern at KB in 2012 and was named winemaker seven years later.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Giusti Vineyard was matured in 34% new French oak for 18 months. It has spicy scents of cinnamon, potpourri, iodine and bitter orange over a core of cranberry and blackberry. The medium-bodied palate is grainy and bright with concentrated, spicy flavors and an ethereal finish. (EB)
So much peach, tangerine and mandarin orange aromas then goes to oyster shell and bark and then follows through to a medium body with lots of tension and fine tannins that take you down deep. Dried orange peel. Delicious and vivid finish.
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is floral with perfume and ripe red berries, as well as notes of framboise, rosemary, and incense. Offering fantastic balance, with fine tannins, fresh seamless acidity, and a good purity of fruit, this is a very attractive wine now and will continue to provide prime drinking over the next 12 or more years.
