The first two vintages of Spottswoode are the only two vintages in the vertical that are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1982 was produced from the original vineyard planted on AXR1 rootstock. The production in 1982 was from only a part of the 37.4 total acres, which has been a complete vineyard since the mid-1990s. This wine – 100% Cabernet Sauvignon – has a dark ruby/amber edge, a Medoc-like, spicy, cedary, loamy soil and black and red currant nose that reminded me of a fully mature Saint-Julien. Nevertheless, there is plenty of fruit left and the vibrancy is there, so this wine probably has another decade at its plateau of maturity.

Medium red. Slightly roasted, balsamic aromas and flavors of chocolate, licorice, cedar and leather are quite evolved but are lifted by a floral element. Delivers attractive vinosity and energy but this rather ungiving wine seems to be thinning out. Did it ever really blossom in bottle?

Mid crimson with an evolved rim. Savoury, dusty – very complex and layered on the nose. Quite intense bouquet. Really exciting spicy nose with a little bit of chocolate. Quite delicate – needs gentle handling. The nose is at its peak while the palate may be drying out a little. But it has lasted awfully well! (LM)

About the producer

Spottswoode
Spottswoode

Spottswoode is one of those rare Napa estates whose reputation rests less on volume or spectacle than on persistent exactitude. Set on the western edge of St Helena, where the Mayacamas rise and afternoon breezes temper the valley’s warmth, the vineyard occupies a favoured pocket of the appellation.
