Tasting notes
Serralunga d'Alba. Maturing mid ruby with bricky rim. A nose that is a little dusty, with dried-fruit notes and sweet candied hints (oak?). Rich and ripe palate with hints of died fruit but showing real vitality. Really plentiful and sweetly concentrated but well balanced. Rich, gravelly tannins. (WS)

Again with a 15% alcohol content that doesn't slip under the radar, I like the more detail-minded personality of the Palladino 2017 Barolo Ornato, in which the mineral notes are a little clearer and more precise. This is a hot-vintage expression with more sharpness than expected, along with pencil shavings and fine-chiseled contouring. Cedar spice and tobacco fill it out. About 3,000 bottles were released.
Ornato is on a fully south facing slope located in the southern end of the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. Aromatically, the 2017 Barolo Ornato is ripe with tobacco, dried black cherry, tar, and licorice. There is full structure and generous fruit up front noted by dried apricot, cranberry compote, and orange zest, with sturdy and ripe tannins. My personal favorite within the lineup of the Palladino 2017s, I like it for its balance and classic appeal. Drink 2024-2042.
