Tasting notes
La Morra. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Brooding, balsamic cherry and raspberry nose with ethereal eucalyptus notes from oak. Supple, juicy raspberry and cherry fruit with bags of chewy tannins. Long, ethereal, cherry-and-eucalyptus finish. Great potential. (WS)

The Mauro Veglio 2021 Barolo Gattera comes from a site in La Morra, and you taste the softness and the delicate nature of this site. This village tends to make the silkiest and sometimes the most accessible expressions of Barolo. This balanced vintage shows pretty floral and fruit nuances and a hint of dusty limestone. A release of 8,500 bottles, Gattera closes with silky tannins. Fruit comes from 70-year-old vines, and what is leftover goes to the Barolo.
The 2021 Barolo Gattera is a youthful red color and is more introspective on the nose, with brooding notes of polished leather, cherry liqueur, menthol, and pine sap. The palate is a bit hollow in terms of its fruit and is gripping and drying upfront. It has shut down much more at this stage and may need time to come around.
The 2021 Barolo Gattera is fabulous. Rich and ample in the glass, the Gattera marries the natural richness of this southeast-facing site with the greater transparency that is common in the Veglio Barolos today. The 2021 possesses striking inner sweetness and perfume that blossoms in the mid-palate and expands to fill out all the layers. There's terrific breadth here.
