The Fattoria le Pupille 2006 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente is very mineral in character with crushed stone and pencil shaving that stand out. The fruit remains a bit flat throughout, and slightly oxidative, but not excessively considering the age of this bottle. You are treated to more iron or rusty aromas on the rather simple finish. The 2004 and the 2006 vintages have a pretty linearity and focus to them.

The 2006 Poggio Valente opens with crushed flowers, raspberries, tar, French oak minerals. This mid-weight Poggio Valente impresses for its gorgeous texture and understated personality, all while showing considerable power in reserve. The wine continues to put weight in the glass as it turns darker and more inward with air. Today the fruit is understandably quite vibrant and fresh. Readers seeking a more complex set of aromas and flavors will want to cellar the 2006 for at least a few more years. This is a fabulous effort from Le Pupille but it needs time.

The 2006 Poggio Valente (Sangiovese, Alicante) is a beautiful version of this wine. Well-articulated aromatics lead to layers of vibrant dark fruit, minerals, licorice, French oak and new leather. Medium to full in body, the 2006 Poggio Valente possesses considerable energy and precision in a powerful, brooding style that needs a few more years of bottle age to fully emerge. This is a wonderful effort from Elisabetta Geppetti.
