Honey, lemon zest, buddleia, and mint inform the nose of Ostertag’s 2004 Riesling Muenchberg. Oily in texture, palpably dense, lusciously citric, yet at the same time almost severe in its phenolic intensity, it nearly carries your tonsils away in its finishing torrent of lemon, honey, citrus zest, and pungent herbs. This positively demands 2-3 years in bottle before re-visiting, and ought then to keep for at least another decade. Andre Ostertag continues to render some of the most distinctively delicious and thought-provoking wines in Alsace. He now has 120 parcels among his 35 acres, and no grower of my acquaintance gives more thought to aesthetic and stylistic considerations when it comes to vinifying and assembling his many lots. Medium bright yellow. Knockout nose melds pineapple, spring flowers and a whiff of honeyed botrytis. Impressively rich and dense but fairly dry, with soil-driven notes of crushed stone and petrol as well as an exotic pineapple aspect. The 14.2% alcohol actually serves to accentuate the sweetness from noble rot, and yet this wine finishes dry and firm, with more wet stone than fruit showing today. Very long and youthfully tight.
