Tasting notes
(90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc) Good full medium ruby. Very ripe aromas of cassis, menthol, mocha and chocolate, with a youthfully medicinal quality. Then sweet, lush and stuffed with fruit; seems quite open-knit and approachable today, no doubt partly due to the malolactic fermentation in barrel. Finishes with substantial tannins and plenty of supporting sweetness of fruit. This is a small project of head Robert Mondavi winemaker Genevieve Janssens and her husband Luc. They vinify barely 250 cases at a winery they built at their home, with the fruit coming from George Hendry Ranch in Napa and Detert Vineyard in Oakville. This wine struck me as more extracted than the cabernets Janssens makes at Mondavi.

The best wine I have ever tasted from Portfolio is their 2007. An identical blend to the 2006, this vintage is much more impressive, evident in the extra texture, additional minerality, and the extraordinary aromatics of this inky purple-colored wine. Sweet cassis, incense, charcoal, and cedar are all present in this opulent, full-bodied red, which is sensationally concentrated, with brilliant purity and delineation. It should drink well for 15-20 years. This small project of Dr. Luke Janssens and his wife Genevieve, who many may know from her career at the Robert Mondavi winery, primarily sources its fruit from the Oakville sector of Napa Valley, particularly the Hendry Ranch. These wines are blends of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Tel. (707) 265-6555
