The powerful entry of the 2024 Villa De Corullon makes a statement, the grapes from the village of Corullon, a blend of different hillside plots from this one village. Mencia dominates, blended with Alicante Bouschet, Estaladina, and the white grape Jerez. The soils are slate but more broken and decomposed, leading to more even ripening. Light in color, it has a sleek, floral quality, and though still in barrel, is already a profound, complete wine. The producer only bottles the plots that are special. This one is. Founded in 1999 by Alvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Perez Palacios, this producer is all about showing off the bedrock, metamorphic, and slate soils in Bierzo, using it as a canvas for the different profiles of Mencia. They farm vineyards that are 130 years old and at high elevation, many interplanted with whites like Palomino.

The very young barrel sample of the 2024 Corullón, their village wine from a puzzle of 90 small plots on slate and quartz soils, is approximately 93% Mencía, 5% Jerez (the white Palomino) and 1% each Alicante Bouschet and Estaladiña, but the final blend is still pending. It fermented with a maceration time of 41 days in oak vats with punching down and is currently aging in barrel. The wine comes in at 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.83. This is a patchwork from many different components; therefore, they have more room for blending and discarding. For example, the rains during the harvest affected it less than in the single vineyard or paraje wines. This is quite fruit-driven, in 2024 there were fewer white grapes. This is always a very complete wine, and in the last few years, they have tried showing more the effect of the vintage, fine-tuning the work in the vineyard more than in the winery. It's very tasty, and the tannins are very fine.
