Score 92/100 · Drink 2005-2016, Daniel Thomases, Wine Advocate, Apr 2005

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino demonstrates what he can do when the weather is on his side. A fresh garnet in tonality, intensely spicy and sweet on the nose, it is solid but round on the palate, structured but velvety and polished, warm and enveloping on the lengthy, elegant close. Drink: 2005-2016. Marco Mantengoli operates in the same part of Montalcino as Giulio Salvioni and Diego Molinari and his wines show the same combination of force and finesse as these major personalities of the zone. Full red. Expressive, very ripe aromas of currant, plum, bitter chocolate, licorice, tobacco and leather. A rather tightly wound midweight, with somewhat rustic flavors similar to the aromas. But sound acidity gives the wine good definition. Finishes firmly tannic, with moderate length and some drying wood tannins.
