Score 88/100 · Drink 2002-2012, Robert Parker, Aug 2000

Closed and tannic, yet promising is the 1997 Geremia (a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot). Not a blockbuster, it exhibits fine complexity in addition to an elegant mineral, dried herb, cherry, and toast-scented nose as well as flavors. Medium-bodied, moderately tannic, firmly structured, and backward, it requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should age for 10-12 years. Deep ruby-garnet. Potent and weighty on the nose, with plum and floral aromas complicated by oak spices. Rich, sweet and velvety on the palate; warm, spicy and concentrated. Finishes with superior intensity and length. Unfortunately, this house's 1997 Chianti Classico Riserva cannot be recommended: cooked in aroma and a bit bitter on the palate, it appears to have undergone an anomalous fermentation.
