The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino lifts up with a unique and exotic display of cherry sauce, sour melon, autumnal spices and tomato leaf. It’s silky and pliant, yet it excites the senses with citrus-infused and hints of black fruit, earthy minerals and zesty acids. The finish is shorter than expected with a sour twang, yet no tannins in sight. This comes across as past peak and declining. Purchased upon release and held in professional storage.

Costanti’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, with its pure, cleanly articulated notes of cherries, tobacco and underbrush, is a textbook example of Sangiovese from Montalcino. It shows excellent concentration, great length and nuanced transparency with fine, elegant tannins and a note of warmth from the alcohol on the finish. This outstanding Brunello will benefit from a few years in the cellar, after which it will drink well to at least age twenty. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Deep red. Blackberry, minerals and dried flowers on the vibrant nose. Then dense and sweet but lively, with compelling intensity and purity of flavor and terrific penetration. The red and darker berry flavors are perfectly framed by ripe acids that give the wine exceptional vinosity and energy. This outstanding and very young Brunello offers an exhilarating combination of fruit of steel, seductive sweetness and a terrific spine-not to mention palate-staining persistence. Relies as much on its acidity as on its ripe tannins for structure.
