Tasting notes
The Fattoria le Pupille 1997 Morellino di Scansano Poggio Valente is more tired and oxidized compared to some of the older vintages presented in this retrospective. There are faded fruit tones with kerosene or paraffin wax. Elisabetta Geppettti acquired this vineyard site in 1996, located about 100 meters higher than where the grapes for Saffredi are planted. This wine very much tastes like an aged Sangiovese.

The 1997 Poggio Valente is a beautifully balanced wine. Layers of ripe, opulent fruit are nicely buttressed by new French oak in this warm, open Poggio Valente. The 1997 shows marvelous depth and richness, with more than enough stuffing to continue to drink well for a number of years. A seamless finish has the last say in this awesome Poggio Valente.
This is the new single-vineyard selection of the estate and an outstanding success in its first vintage. Deep ruby-garnet. Powerful, penetrating, precise aromas of plum, raspberry and tar. Warm plummy, jammy flavors offer substantial impact and dimension; the texture swells on the palate. Firm tannins give grip and definition. Should enjoy a long life ahead.
