The highlight in this range, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is the biggest and most dramatic of these wines. It is also the wine in this range that plays more true to type. An exotic mélange of crème de cassis, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice, liquefied rocks and blueberry jam run through this sumptuous, full-bodied Cabernet. Diamond Creek fans will flip out over the 2014, as it captures all the signatures of this great site and yet won't take years (or decades) to be at its best. Today, the Volcanic Hill is super impressive, not to mention flat-out delicious.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted blind. Exceptionally deep purplish crimson. Sweet and a bit of alcohol. Just a tad too sweet for my personal taste to keep on drinking. And a little astringent on the end. Could be the icon wine of a non-European line up. I was assured by my American colleagues that I underestimated this and Diamond Creek's wines are indeed famously long-lived and terroir-expressive. (JR)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is a little youthfully subdued and broody at this early stage, revealing black soil, truffles and tapenade notions over a blackberry and cassis core, plus a touch of chocolate box. The medium to full-bodied palate springs to life with vibrant black fruit and subtle earth and savory suggestions, framed by rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long.
