The 1999 vintage at SLV was small due to replanting efforts. Spring of 1999 was cool and vines were behind in development until the second week of September when light rain preceded a number of warmer weeks. Harvest began on 3 October and went through 25 October. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured 18 months in French oak. Originally released in 2002 with an RRP of $100. Medium garnet with a bit more density of colour than the 1995 Fay. Breathtaking wine. Still dense but with ample tertiary interest – perfectly aged. Iodine, dried leaf and leather with dried black cherry. A slight bit of cocoa. Soft, very mellow tannin. Flavourful and wonderfully long. Never-endingly complex AND delicious. Warren Winiarski founded Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in 1970 when he purchased the Stag’s Leap Vineyard in Napa’s Stags Leap District. The 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon – only the second vintage – won the famous 1976 Judgement of Paris blind tasting, rocketing the estate to fame.
