Good red-ruby. Vinous aromas of redcurrant, black cherry, shoe polish and tobacco. Rather dry-edged in the middle, with currant, leather and shoe polish notes offering moderate complexity. Finishes with dusty tannins.

The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to copious quantities of herbaceous-tinged cassis fruit, full body, ripe tannin, and a soft, plump personality. It will be accessible young, yet age for 10-15 years. At the end of my tastings, Bo Barrett opened a 1986 Montelena (rated 94), and it is still incredibly young, rich, vibrant, and full-bodied. It is a terrific expression of Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon made by a master. It appears to have another 20-25 years of aging potential. (Release date 9/06) Tel. (707) 942-5105; Fax (707) 942-4221
(84% cabernet sauvignon and 16% merlot) Good ruby-red. Aromas of black fruits, violet, licorice, minerals and tarry oak. Juicy on entry, then less full and sweet in the middle than the 2002. A distinctly tougher, more rustic cabernet, finishing with substantial, slightly dry tannins.
